04.17.2009 Press Release

The definition of what it means to fight fire is always evolving. The earliest firefighters fought fires from outside of the structure. Early firefighter (PPE) Personal Protective Equipment was built for warmth and dryness, not fire protection. Felt caps, wool trousers, wool shirts and long leather or rubber slickers thrown over the top were the predecessors of today’s turnout gear.

Firefighting tactics changed and firefighters were called to enter burning buildings rather than fight fires from outside. This change in tactics along with technological advances in fire-resistant materials helped spur rapid development of protective gear from a number of manufacturers. Codes and standards for this protective clothing were developed to minimize the risks associated with firefighting.

WMFRD has just put into service new turnout gear that meets the latest safety standards.

Some of the technological advances of this PPE:

  • Additional layer of thermal protection to help guard against compression from SCBA.
  • Reduced vulnerability to water, steam and flame. When you reach, full protection stays on your wrist.
  • 42-stitch bar tacks at all stress points for added durability.
  • Reduced water absorption in pants legs, coat cuffs and yoke to keep your working weight lighter.
  • Reduction in fire fighter stress through a series of innovative, ergonomic features that help deliver exceptional mobility and comfort.
  • Increased retrofeflective safety trim.
