Qualifications

Applicant requirements:

Commitment
Emergencies can happen 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Firefighters are expected to respond to emergency callouts whenever available.
Time
Firefighters are required to attend paid training in Firefighter I, Hazmat Operations and First Responder EMS training as well as two, three hour (day and evening sessions available) training sessions per month, and to attend emergency callouts whenever available.

Location
Response time to an emergency is critical. To fulfill our commitment, it is essential that our members live near their assigned station.

Good Health
Firefighting is a strenuous job, both mentally and physically. Pre-employment medical and psychological examinations are required (paid for by the West Metro Fire-Rescue District).

Background/Criminal Record Check
Applicants are required to have a background and criminal record search completed as a requirement of a conditional job offer.

Valid Minnesota Driver’s License
Applicants are required to possess a valid class D Minnesota driver’s license with a demonstrated safe driving record.

ALL APPLICANTS MUST:
reside within a four minute response to one of our three fire stations

  • be 18 years of age or older

  • possess a High School Diploma or GED

  • be in good physical condition, able to meet the physical demands of fire fighting (undergo and pass a physical abilities test administered by the district and medical and psychological examinations by the district’s occupational physician and psychologist)

  • be able to communicate effectively

  • be able to work as a team member

  • complete the West Metro Fire-Rescue District’s Probationary Training Program

  • be available and regularly attend training sessions (8:30am and 6:30pm)

  • be available and attend station duty details as assigned

  • attend monthly district meetings

  • be available to respond to incidents (may occur anytime day or night, throughout the year);

  • obtain Minnesota Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazmat Operations and First Responder certifications

  • successfully complete probationary period (approximately one year)

  • possess a reliable motor vehicle

Note: Firefighters are not permitted to grow facial hair, except moustache and goatee (Per District policy and Federal regulatory requirements)

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:

Additional considerations used in evaluating candidates:

  • permanently employed in the Minneapolis, Minnesota area

  • previous fire fighting experience

  • Class D drivers license

  • High school education or GED

  • Ability to respond to daytime calls
